The SalsaRica Salsa Dancing School in Zürich is done. In an few days this empty space will be packed with people for the openings-party. New simple materials fitting to the old, both new and existing furniture, recycled industrial components, new technical components and the absence of new paint and finishings, made up for the new SalsaRica Club Atmosphere. Zürich, House with one wall, Christian Kerez. The sky is dramatic and the interiors are casted in shadows. Only its contours are clearly readable. A bit disappointed that its famous structural principle with one wall won’t reveal itself today I realize I need to come back another time.

Monte Carasso – Luigi Snozzi

Luigi Snozzi, El Cunvént. In 1993 Snozzi transformed the local Augustiner monastery building into a multifunctional center for the village with primary school. Snozzi opened up every wing of the building with passages from the central square to the outsides. The rather closed monastery was transformed into a central village square with a building that is fully transparent. In this way the building opens up the village in both a literate and an figurative way.

Luigi Snozzi, Gym Palestra, 1981-1984: part of the interventions Snozzi made for the center of Monte Carasso. A sports center with both interior as exterior sport fields. The interior space (containing a gym) is partly subterranean; on one side connecting to the village, on the other side connecting to the central village square. Above all it is serving the village without being an obstruction.

Luigi Snozzi, casa Guidotti, 1980. Close to central village square where several Snozzi interventions are to be found, we immediately recognized his style in this house. Radical in design but at the same time loyal to tradition and evaporating in it’s surroundings.

Dance Factory

Almost delivered: the SalsaRica dance school. Adjacent to a former factory where Chiquita banana’s were ripened before selling, Spillmann Echsle Architekten developed an interior for a Salsa Dance school in an existing industrial building. The new interior stays close with the existing and every transformation comes raw and unpolished.

Tired of all the rain we decide to escape to Tessin for a couple of days. In the morning, after a full night of snow we drive down towards Chironico. As expected we get a splendid view on the bouldering area. For bouldering however we need to be much more south, so we decide continue driving to Avegno.
